about "Gold on Black" - Martyn Tverdun - intersection of arts

Gold on Black     gallery>>>

"And God said ‘Let there be light’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness." Genesis 1:3.

Art isn’t made. It is revealed.

I have been trying to find a way in which the process of creating itself reveals what is hidden on subconscious level, answers essential questions about my existence.

What a revelation it was when I tried block printing on black paper for the first time.

The technique gives me that sharp line that might only be achieved by carving.

The process of leading a chisel reminds me of leading a sword.

I am cutting away everything that is excessive, and simplifying the subject down to a symbol, a character.

It  is more like sculpting than drawing or painting:

Sculpture on paper.

Even though there is no tonal gradation, printing with bright gold-ish paint on black paper gives some form to the body. It is like shining light into dark void, bringing to life the creatures inside.
